My current work strongly reflects my five years of living in Burkina Faso and Namibia. I found the colors and patterns of Africa to be an almost overwhelming burst of inspiration in my fibre art, and I find myself still to be in its thrall. I often use the hand-carved wood blocks made by the Oshiwa Designs carvers in Namibia to make hand-stamped fabric for my quilts, feeling closer to being back there whenever I pick one up and layer it with fabric paint. I know that the intense charge of color evident in most of my work is also a product of being there----I don't think I ever combined so much intensity of pattern in one piece before seeing how all of ordinary life is so vibrantly in your face over there! My goal with my work is to interpret the joy found in such a vibrant culture, where even the houses can be fuschia! |
